Debian: Upgrade to 2.6.4 Kernel, SMC Card No Longer Works

Hello All

I recently upgraded my Debian box to the 2.6.4 kernel and my SMC9432 no longer seems to be working. I had compiled the epic100 driver into the kernel as a module when configuring, and when I have a look at dmesg it seems to be loading the driver

epic100.c Written by Donal Becker and so on
epic100 MII transceiver and so on
epic100 Autonegotiation and so on
eth0: SMSC EPIC/100 and so on

however, it stops there.

ifconfig eth0 returns all the information about the nic. When I try a network restart I get the following:

Reconfiguring network interfaces: Ignoring unknown interface eth1=eth1
cat: /var/run/dhclient.pid: No such file or directory
Unrecognized kernel version
done.

the interfaces file contains the auto eth0
iface eth0 inet dhcp

Rout issues? Issues with 9432 under 2.6.4? Any ideas?
