connection to ":0.0" refused by server

Hi everybody,

When I try to use some program (like emacs) that use X after loggin as root with the command "su" I receive this message:

tizamd:/home/tiziano/suse8 # emacs
Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server
Xlib: No protocol specified

emacs: Cannot connect to X server :0.0.
Check the DISPLAY environment variable or use `-d'.
Also use the `xhost' program to verify that it is set to permit
connections from your machine.

What can I do?

Thanks a lot! Bye

How do you start the programs? Make sure you do it from X. If you do and there's still error use
xhost +

yes xhost + is important to tell your x server not to block (don't forget to xhot - when you are done, or you can xhot a specific ip if you want)
and be sure that your firewall is not blocking port 6000

xhost + is not very safe and if you have problems with running X on your local machine (not from network), it's better to block port 6000, especially if you've connected to the Net.

to make it safer, try "xhost +localhost"
