client machine not being able to access internet fully

Hello all,
i better don't call that machine as client b'coz i don't have any server.

The setup is as:
2 machines: 1 Desktop, 1 laptop. Both having XP and Slackware.
ADSL modem connected to Desktop (1st NIC of Desktop) and laptop is connected to Desktop (2nd NIC of Desktop) using CAT 5 lan wire.
No router or hub or switch.

Now the problem is when i'm running windows XP on the desktop, the laptop has limited access to internet. Better to say that its behaving strangely. (There is no problem if i run Slackware on Desktop).

Browsing is perfect on laptop but if i try to mail somewhen, if the content is mere 1-2 lines, it will send but if the size of mail is big, it denies. Yahoo denies (server no found), orkut.com just hangs.
yahoo messenger is working perfectly.

on desktop i've McAfee running and laptop having its inbuilt windows firewall.

Where should i look for the problem.

regards

EDIT: even stopping firewall service on desktop not helping.
No proxy server is running on Desktop. I followed the Network wizard of M$ to establish the internet connection and local lan.
