cannot successfully ping xp>slack or slack>xp

I have a 3c509(ISA) and an intel based pci card on the xp box. When I ran through the network settings in Xp, the subnet mask is 255.255.255.0 and the ip is 192.168.0.1 and on the slack box I ran ifconfig eth0 192.168.0.2

I tried pinging 192.168.0.1 from slack and it never finishes (^C shows 100% packet loss).. in xp I try and ping 192.168.0.2 and I get a 'Destination Unreachable' type error... any ideas?
