cannot successfully ping xp>slack or slack>xp

I have a 3c509(ISA) and an intel based pci card on the xp box. When I ran through the network settings in Xp, the subnet mask is and the ip is and on the slack box I ran ifconfig eth0

I tried pinging from slack and it never finishes (^C shows 100% packet loss).. in xp I try and ping and I get a 'Destination Unreachable' type error... any ideas?
