I am running Fedora8 and I am am trying to connect to the internet through a Windows proxy server (FreeProxy). I configured the Network Proxy and the Network Device Control, as well as the settings in my browser but I am still unable to surf the internet. I also cannot update through yum.

When I use Firefox I get the error message: "Firefox is configured to use a proxy server that is refusing connections."

Can anyone help? Is the type of authentication on the proxy important?

PS the proxy is working fine with Windows.

well the error reads very much as a problem on the windows side or incorrect configuration on your side. as for yum, i *think* that if you export your proxy of choice in your /etc/rc.local for global changes or ~/.bash_profile for user specific changes, e.g. "export http_proxy=http://1.2.3.4:3128" then yum should use that automatically.
