Can ping but not download

Just installed redhat 9 on a toshiba laptop and connected it to my wireless hub via ethernet cable. by this means, i can ping my router, my dns server, and any website so long as i use the ip address. when i try to ping "amazon.com" or try to download the amazon webpage on my browser (firefox), nothin' happens. is this a firewall problem? any hints would be greatly appreciated.

no, this sounds like a dns problem - i.e. the names you type in are not being transformed to ip address by your pc.

are you using a static ip or dhcp. if it's static, you might need to add a nameserer(s) to /etc/resolv.conf

as far as i can tell, i'm using dhcp, and have entered the dhcp server data from the ipconfig command on a winxp machine on the same network.

i'm note sure what you mean. if you're running a dhcp you don't need to enter anything, the machine will broadcast for a dhcp server.

what's the output of "cat /etc/network/interfaces"

also show

ifconfig -a

and

netstat -nr

and

cat /etc/resolv.conf

Sorry - blame my temporary confusion between dhcp and dns servers on a significant lack of caffeine.
I'll try your commands this evening.
Thanks

Many thanks for the quick help. Problem was I told my machine that the connection was xDSL, whereas I should have told it it was ethernet. Anyway, I'm up and running on my first Linux experiment.
