Hi,
I have a "Toshiba software modem AMR" on winXP, is it really not possible to use it on linux?

Thanks,

I don't think you can. There has been some tremendous progression with software modems that use the PCI bus, but I don't think there has been much movement on the AMR/CNR front. If I were you I would get a serial-port modem. They work fine.

Basically the AMR modems are a couple of chips that turn your soundcard into a modem. An even cheaper way to scam people as it costs even less to manufacture than a PCI windmodem.

Thanks for confirming my fears. Unfortunately, I have a Toshiba laptop with only USB and a parallel port. Am I doomed to never use LINUX on the web?

There are some USB modems that will work with Linux. For a more complete guide, head on over to linux-usb.org and also to linmodems.org.
