can't understand linux networking

I just installed mandrake 10, i did setup ip add, subnet mask and the gateway. It didn't connect to internet. Provided that i have ICS with a router behind the hub,

I have partioned the XP and mandrake in same computer (main computer which is connected to modem and printer. I just start mandrake today, Magically it is connected to the internet.

Another question, I saw LAN connection in mandrake 9.2. But there is nothing in 10 that i can see the computers in my LAN. I don't even know how can i find samba.

I need help,

the conf files are in /etc/samba, you may have some stuff in /usr/lib/samba and the doc's are in /usr/share/doc/sambaXXXX this is were all my stuff is anyway - there is a man file aswell, try man smb

I had to do some manual work with the smb.conf to get Samba working initially with Mandrake 10. Some of the info at samba.org was quite helpful with this. As was said, the samba files are in /etc/samba. I didn't have to do anything with /usr/lib/samba, or any file other than smb.conf.

However, the regular networking stuff was all done through harddrake and the "Mandrakelinux Control Center"

9.2 handled my setup fine with the installer, but they dumbed down that part of the installer in 10.0 and it didn't really know how to handle 2 network cards properly. But after initial install, I went into harddrake and re-ran the LAN setup for each individual card, and all was well.

Perhaps you just hadn't issued 'service network restart' after configuring. I'm pretty sure it will do it for you after configuring with MCC, but I don't think harddrake will restart the network for you. This would mean that on the next network startup things would work, in your case this was the next boot.
