Can't ping

Hi
I can't ping an outside address from my linux box on a lan using private address range 192.168.150.x and gateway address 192.168.150.1 neither by host name nor by ip address.

My gateway is a windows 2000 with ISA proxy.

Is there a workaround?
My lan is too tight a place for linux

TIA

win2k has a built in firewall and you may have a firewall on the linux box

if your ip is on the same network as the gateway ip you should be able to ping unless your default route is wrong, or you have a firewall up.

i think the problem is that if you're connecting to the internet using a proxy server, then if you try and ping from the command prompt, then the ping command has no idea where to send the request.

since you're browser is configured to contact a specific machine for packet requests, it can reach the outside world. but ping has no idea what to do with the packets, which is why they're getting dropped.

i'd suggest using ICS in win2k. much much better... allows your machine to access the internet like usual. none of that messy proxy stuff. plus ICS is real easy to use and setup on win2k.

ISA server is somewhat related to linux NAT and ip MASQ

it must be configured to forward ip and ports, it sounds like it's not configured correctly.

I would use linux with iptables as your router and firewall

If all you have is a proxy server you will only be able to browse.

Sorry, but ICS just plain sucks..

You will never be able to host games or make other types of connections that require port mapping of some form.

ISA is capable of doing it, but in my opinion linux is better.

Thank you indeed for the replies. Actually, ISA is much better than ICS in terms of security and flexibility. The big problem is that I have no control at all on the gateway settings, I was just wondering how to trick that notorious ISA server to build an underground channel with my linux box that I managed to smuggle into our corporate network.
