box with 2 NICs, another with just 1 NIC

I am living in a dorm that provides one ethernet outlet per person, where physical routers are disallowed. I have one computer connected directly to this outlet. This computer attached directly has a second NIC. I would like to connect a second computer to the internet using the second NIC on the first computer described. I'm guessing the best way is through NAT.

I've been looking through online guides, including tldp. I am on slackware 10.2 for the first comp, and kubuntu 6.06 for the second, both running 2.6 kernels. I have not been able to get anything working... I am sure I am messing up early on because even after assigning an address of 192.168.0.1 to the second NIC on the first computer, I don't get any data lights on the NIC.

As quick questions... do I need to bridge the connections? (eth0 is connected to the external internet, eth1 will be for internal). And do I need a crossover cable for NAT?

I would greatly appreciate a walkthrough on how to setup the first computer.

Thanks!

how the hell are they going to know if you have a router? i would get one and stick behind your computer so they can see it during the room checks

anyways, you just need to search google for an iptables NAT script

I don't think your two PCs are properly connected. You need a hub/switch between them or a crossover cable to connect them. NAT/Masquerate on the first PC is what you need.
Code:
$man iptables
