bizarre network problem

I previously had 1 win 98 computer and 1 redhat 9 computer networked successfully. Using iptables i sent the internet connection through the linux box to windows.

My hdd failed, and have tried to re-setup the network, which hasn't worked.

Redhat 9 is ip: 192.168.0.1 and subnet 255.255.255.0
win 98 is ip: 192.168.0.2 gateway: 192.168.0.1 subnet 255.255.255.0

Both machines can ping themselves, neither can ping the other..

I have a feeling it is something to do with redhat9 as I haven't touched the win98 machine, is there anything else I need to have set up?

Maybe you should see if you get a link!
Are you using a switch or crossover ?
Try to change the cable!

I am using a crossover cable, I have changed the crossover cable and no luck... what else can i test and how can i test it?
I don't need any kernel modules installed for this do I ? I installed redhat 9 with a custom install to install all the things I wanted.

winipcfg:

host Name: Windows98

Node Type: Broadcast

ipconfig:

1 Ethernet Adapter
IP Address: 192.168.0.2
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.0.1

I don't know why there is '0 Ethernet Adapter' .. I have checked in hardware profiles and there is only one installed. I don't know whether this would be the problem.. in winipcfg it only has one ethernet adapter.

At the linux side everything seems to be ok!

To the Window$ side:

Trie to look at the systemconfiguration under:

-> start
->Einstellungen
-> Systemsteuerung
-> System

Are there 2 nic`s ?

Somethimes the Winf**k just has an idea of imagine a second NIC out of nothing !! ;-)

yea, the device manager should be the right name!

so, well, i know it`s not easy buy may be you can connect an other pc to the other side of the wire ?

or just boot something like knoppix for cd ?

I do not have any windows here so i can`t check what my says!

1. Did you get a link on each card ?
2. maybe just kick out the card (of the system configuration) and then reboot the windo$ so that the card is reinstalled ?

Didnt work.. couldnt ping the redhat9 machine and the redhat9 machine couldnt ping it.
