I know this is in passing but make sure that repository is enabled second, VCL has a repository for ubuntu on their website
Plus the version on the the ubuntu in synaptic is old.
here is a link to vlc website and I copied and pasted the following from their web site
the new version is 0.8.6C I have on windows and Linux.
Ubuntu Dapper Drake LTS 6.06
Dapper will be supported until June 2009 by Canonical. But VLC version is very old in Dapper, so use our packages to get the latest VLC version.
Add our repository that way:
*
Be sure to have universe repository enabled. And type these commands in a terminal:
echo "deb
ftp://ftp.videolan.org/pub/videolan/ubuntu dapper universe" > /etc/apt/sources.list.d/vlc.list
apt-get update
apt-get install vlc vlc-plugin-esd mozilla-plugin-vlc libdvdcss2
In bold above is important
you can just copy and paste the above into a terminal, if you do this type sudo than enter your password than copy and paste
the above . if you have libcssdvd2 don't copy that.
just want to add,
since you like ubuntu you may like mint Linux check them out
http://linuxmint.com/ they have a new look with gnome desktop. this distro uses the next version of ubuntu after 6.0.6.
