apache2.2

I have a debian sarge 3.1 and i'm trying to compile httpd.2.2 but at the end of the ./configure --prefix=/usr/local/httpd-2.2.2 --enable-rewrite run make i get this:
Quote:
root@www:/usr/local/httpd-2.2.2# make
bash: make: command not found
The configure did not show any sign of trouble i don't understand why this happens !

You miss make, or it's not in your PATH. Use your distro's package manager to install make, automake, gcc and all the necessary development tools to be able to compile source code
