apache external access problems

Hey

I'm running 2 computers, the first is a linux box. I have 2 nic cards in this linux box, one connected directly to my DSL modem, the other to my 2nd PC.

I have everything set up properly, as far as internet sharing and the linux box as an "internet gateway", if thats the correct term.

I'm running Mandrake 10.0, using the standard APACHE2.0 that comes with it.

When I type 127.0.0.1 into the linux box, it works. When I type my external IP into either computer, bingo, it works.

However, when I try to get anyone else (ie - outside of my LAN, friend at his house etc) to connect using my external IP, no dice at all. I have set the Mandrake firewall to allow web server, I've even tried disabling the firewall entirely.

I've searched a bit, and found people saying I should change the "listen" port...so I tried changing the following 2 lines by adding <externalIP>:

listen <externalIP>:8080
listen <externalIP>:80

but no dice...except now 127.0.0.1 on the linux box doesn't work.

I've read things about changing the "ServerName" and stuff, but i cant' decipher anything easily enough to change it. Most people seem to say if I can get the external IP to work from a comp inside the LAN, it should work outside.

Anyway, thanks in advance for any help

What you've done is fine. Most consumer grade ISPs block port 80 (http port) by default. The only thing now, is you'll have to specify in your browser which port to use.

If you've changed your port to 8080, you first need to make sure that port is open in your firewall settings. Then, when you want to pull up your page, you would put in to your friend's computer, http://<external ip>:8080 HTH

hey
thanks for the input, I was wondering about something like that.

is there any way I can ask my ISP to cancel this crap they're doing? Or is it generally something they won't do. Maybe I should ask them..haha

thanks again
