I've just signed on with the local ADSL ISP (Telus.net), and am having trouble connecting. I've tried reading the DSL Howto, and the DHCPD man, but have only managed to get quite confused.
I have two net cards in my Linux (Mandrake 9.0) box; the first, eth0, is connected to my LAN, while the second, eth1, is connected to the ADSL modem. I can succesfully ping both net cards, and other machines on the LAN, but anything directed to the world (via eth1) fails. I suspect I have at least configured dhcpd incorrectly, as I am particularly confused by it's man page which seems to assume it's use as a server rather than as a dhcp client. Am I wrong in thinking I need to set it up as a client to use the ADSL provider's dhcp server?.
One document seemed to hint that the modem should be on eth0 and the LAN on eth1 rather than the other way round. Is this critical or simply the author's preference?
I've just made that change - LAN is now on eth1 and the ADSL modem on eth0. I've changed the linuxconf/networking/Host information and other files to reflect the physical change, including the primary name, domain name, alias, and IP address blank for eth0 (telus assigns dynamic IP's). I've also made sure dhcpcd is installed to serve as a dhcp client.
Where do I find ADSL setup? I can't find any such proggie on my hard drive or distribution disks.
That produces the response:
bash: adsl-setup: command not found
BTW; ifconfig shows that eth0 is connecting to the ISP's website at least long enough to get a dynamic IP, but any attempt to go to any other URL fails.

Do you have a nameserver specified in /etc/resolv.conf? Did you try to ping ip adresses rather than host names of the internet sites. If that succeds, then you don't have a valid DNS server IP in /etc/resolv.conf

there are url's in /etc/resolv.conf (I believe dhcpcd is getting them from the ISP's dhcp server, because I didn't put them there). However, when I try to ping any of the URL's, I get "network is unreachable". I've got a feeling the settings for my dial-up provider are interfering with the ADSL configuration somehow, so I am currently clearing all the internet settings on my Mandrake box, so I can try a cleaner configuration. In the meantime I'm reduced to accessing my dialup account from an old Windoze box (grrrmmph.......)
