Red Hat ADSL connection problem

Hi,

I've just installed RH 9.0, ran adsl-setup and entered the neccessery info. After that I ran (as instructed) ifup ppp0 and after a minute or so got an error saying:

adsl_start: line 217: 1534 Terminated $CONNECT "$@" >/dev/null 2>^1

After that I ran adsl-connect manually and got the following error:

using ppp0
connect ppp0 <-> /dev/pts/0
Remote message: Access denied
CHAP authentication failed
Connection terminated
pppoe: read (asynchReadFromPPP): session 7123 Input/Output error

Running adsl-status gives this:

link down

followed by one of the following lines, depending on whether I started adsl-connect manually or not:

- can't read pppoe PID file /var/run/pppoe-adsl.pid.pppoe
- couldn't find interface corresponding to pppd pid 5515

Some more info:
- I can connect to WinXp with no problem
- I'm sure my ISP uses pppoe (it says so in Win client)
- I've tried this using RG 7.1, RH 8.0 and RH 9.0 - just terminal mode
- I have two network cards, I've tried to connect using each one
- I know at least one card works as I've set up internal network previously and had no problems.

Can somebody help? Thanx.

Matjaz

Lightbulb GET THIS!

Ok i dont know if this will work for you guys or not but i was having the same problem with my dsl. so i went and downloaded the enternet 100 pppoe client for linux and installed it and now all is well. this werked for me i believe that because my isp ships enternet 300 as part of thier set up package so i think this is what they are set up to use but in windows server 2003 it worked without it ......i dont know just a sugestion

whoops! wrong client!

Sorry guys , slight correction.

i remember haveing problems with enternet 100 pppoe, so I downloaded rp-pppoe & its graphical front end instead. This client can be found at www.roaringpenguin.com . now i havent gotten the front end to work in Red Hat 9 yet but the main client part works well. in fact im posting this from linux as we speak!

hope that helps, good luck!

btw.... it comes as an rpm so its pretty easy to install!

yep

yea, I have noticed pppoe seems to generate LOTS of meyham in linux for now. i guess its still in its infantcy for us linux users. although once its up, its up for good! (unlike some os's we wont mention here =) ) and I just figured out by paying attention to what I am doing that I have to use both of the above mentioned clients to get mine going. i think its because rp-pppoe starts the adsl service thats compatable with my modem and and my isp is using enternet 300 for winblows boxes so i have to use the one for linux to logon to thier network.
