3Com 3C905 PCI 10/100 ?

3Com 3C905 PCI 10/100

Would this be a sutible choice of basic network card to simply connect 2 home pc's, one linux the other win 98. they are also quite a distance apart. How do I connect them up?

I am also getting a router, would this card be compatible with all routers, with linux mandrake 9.1 and win 98.

Thanks. =)

Yes that card will work fine. It will work with the router also.

To connect them just use the appropriate cat5 cable. To go from computer to router use a patch cable. To go from computer to computer use a crossover cable. I think you can go 1000ft. with cat5 but I'm not positive.

Correction on Cat5 limit.

Cat5 max homerun distance = 300'

Also, your router may boost the signal with means if you put it between the two boxes then you could possible get up to 600' between them but that would be pushing it.

Please note that with your router you probably won't need the Crossover cable....So I wouldn't buy one unless you really need it. Wait till you get your router and then get the cables you need.

Take Care and good luck!
