[conceptual] Network Disk setup

Friends,

I have questions regarding installing network disks on a home network [may be applied for other networks also, but I am considering for home/small office networks].

Recently, the prices of HDDs and S/PATA->ETH covers prices are falling rapidly [at least in my country]. So, what I would like to do is a simple and affordable solution for data storage. [I have read through some products [such as Lacie, WD etc] and they are mainly based on Win systems.]

Now, we are out and purchased one HDD and one S/PATA->ETH enclosure. We have installed the disk into the enclosure and connected to our LAN.

So, the questions go:

1. We would like to format this S/PATA disk with ext2/ext3 format, but how can we make our Linux machine "see" this network disk [it is unformatted and has nothing on it to broadcast its IP]? [Maybe the HDD enclosures have this ability, I don't know.]
2. How after seeing this network disk, how can we perform our "usual" disk operations [move, copy, delete] on this disk? [There is a program in www.twonkyvision.com, but it does not work with all hardware, it is very selective. we do not want to purchase some specific and high-priced disks, so we are going out with the OEM stuff.]
3. How can we make this network disk "shareable" by the other computers on the network? [it is ok if it is running some program on it, or other pcs can share files/folders on the network, but our network HDD will work independent of any pcs.].
4. How can we authorize users to connect to the HDD once they are inside the network?

If I can solve these, I think I will go out and have a HDD and enclosure and install it on my network. After this, -surely- I will post my experiences at LQ.

Thanks everyone for reading and replying in advance.

Regards.

To assist, this is our written correspondance with TwonkyMedia Support Team:

Quote:
Good morning,

I am interested in your product TwonkyMedia, but unfortunately I have many questions that I couldn't find an answer in your website and forums. Please note that I am an individual, not a developer nor a manufacturer.

I have come into your software in an intrnational computer magazine published in Turkey [chip maybe? but not sure]. It is the software I need, since I am trying to build up my home network sytem.

I am thinking of purchasing a S[P]ATA HDD with a S[P]ATA->ETH enclosure, so I can connect this one to my swich at home. I would like to purchase TwonkyMedia and install it on this HDD and make a data storage device, working independently of the pcs I have at home.

However, in your website I did not see any information regarding installing TwonkyMedia on this type of hardware [affordable solutions, let's call it]. It seems to me that your software can only run on specific hardware [preinstalled mainly] or requires good *NIX knowledge. I am not an expert on *NIX systems [though I am running openSuSE 10.2 on both my laptop and desktop] nor networking. But your product -in my opinion- is the most suitable one, since noone like me wants to store his/her valuable files on a FAT32 partition [as far as I know, TwonkyMedia formats the drives with ext2 filesystem].

I wonder, if TwonkyMedia can run on an "affordable system" as I described above. I thought of NSLU2 as a solution [to attach my USB disks], but this product is also very pricey in my country. Can you give me an answer on this one?

Thank you very much for your kind consideration in advance.

With my very best regards,
The reply was:

Hi,

the product you mention is not supported - sorry.

The installation requires some UNIX knowledge.

Unfortunately a device like the NSLU2 is allready the lowest performing
platform that makes sense for a media server.

A cheaper system just would be to slow and does not have enough memory for
this task.

Sorry
The TwonkyVision Team
PS: I am not trying to spread FUD about TwonkyMedia. Upon request, I can supply the whole mail headers, or the message itself.
