The unofficial one works: http://www.whatsappfor.org/software/...u-phone-touch/
... but, using unofficial clients is against their policy and *could* get you banned[0].

Anything that works on the desktop will work on the phone. Gimp, LibreOffice...Franz...VMware, Chrome, Wine, 0 A.D. ...anything. If it's in the ARM repos, and based on people's complaints about the BQ tablet, that seems like a pretty big if right now.

Err ... but your Franz/Whatsapp client isn't usable on the desktop either (even the API is forbidden to hack).
Those who rely on it can't risk being banned from their network.

I am quite interested in running Ubuntu on phone, I heard good and bad comment about it but I still want to try, and I planned to get a used Nexus to install it, than to purchase a custom build model, so that if it sucks I still can flash back to Android. My question is, can I get update regularly like the official release models ?

As long as it's a Nexus, I believe so. The kernel of the Ubuntu phone is actually Android, so all updates do is update packages.

I tried it on my Samsung tablet (GT-P3113), and not only was the screen resolution way off to the point of being unusable, but I couldn't get updates to correct it to fix the problem. So from my experience on unofficial builds, I would say just stay away and use the official builds provided by Canonical for the Nexuses.

Really (no sarcasm)? I've always assumed that it would just work on nexus devices (having to use an old android-Linux kernel is a huge deal breaker) ... Since I'd still like to buy a better Ubuntu phone (the old BQ is terrible) I'll probably go for a cheap Meizu.

Really (no sarcasm). It does just work on Nexus devices, but anything other than a Nexus is not officially supported. Sorry if I wasn't clear about that.
Why not a cheap Nexus?

^ i got meself a cheap nexus 4 for exactly that purpose, but the hardware seems to be extremely feeble(*).
in the end i just gt rid of it.

right now i'm thinking of getting myself the smallest "real laptop" (to install "real linux") available and use a dumb phone again.
what's the smallest real laptop? does it get smaller than this? the form factor is good enough for me, but i'd really need a faster cpu, more ram, more screen resolution, and it could be overall thinner and lighter.

(*) actually, the way android works, the borders between software, firmware and hardware are fuzzy, or unknown, and i was never able to ascertain what my problem (usb data connection non-existent) actually was.

Would this fit the bill?

I love my Geeksphone. As long as they update forever, I'm cool?

Is it GPLed, depends on how much they lock it down? Proprietary systems run Linux...

I own number 1 so don't try using it! 0 you can have.
