Thanks ondoho. that's interesting. It's not what I was referring to but good to see other development is ongoing. I was referring to Samsung investing large sums of money into Enlightenment as a smartphone "DE". I have some nostalgia as well as some respect for Enlightenment as a low footprint, good looking desktop since it was actually my first experience with Linux. When emx runtimes came to OS/2 I installed Enlightenment as a package to replace the stodgy IBM default Presentation Manager. Smartphones seem a natural for it but I haven't seen much lately and wondered if any development was still ongoing in other parts of the world.

I think it actually is what you are refering to.
A connection between Tizen, Samsung & Enlightnement is apparent on both websites.
Of course I don't know where exactly the money went, or what came out of it.
But
Enlightenment.org mentions both Samsung & Tizen on their main page
both sites have a search function. Feel free to search "Samsung" and "Enlightenment" on Tizen's website, or "Tizen" and "Samsung" on Enlightenment's.
Enlightenment has always been a scalable desktop environment and has had "mobile" support for a very long time (probably a decade or more) that I remember. If Samsung is investing money into Enlightenment, it is probably because they want some additional features or adaptations to be worked into Enlightenment, that they can use to optimize it for their platform.
I don't see a problem with that.
But I've never seen or heard of a Samsung phone with Tizen. Perhaps they are keeping it as a backup plan, alike to how Huawei had their own OS going just in case.

At this point in the conversation, nobody has a problem with that.
Just looking for info, not judgement.

More likely development just fizzled out when they saw how difficult it is to establish an alternative phone OS on the market, and how much cheaper & more convenient (?I guess) it is to use Android.
However, given recent developments, they might want to pick it up again.
Or maybe the licensing is such that anybody could pick it up again, IDK.
Thanks again, ondoho, but I gotta ask, "Have I offended you in some way?".
No.
However - since you ask - there's a significant portion of LQ users who rarely click on links and never read beyond maybe one or 2 sentences, and then reply in a manner that betrays their ignorance - ignorance that would have been cured had they done a minimum of research independently, and actually read up on what was suggested.
This I find annoying, in an impersonal sort of way.
The fact that some of these users write long, grammatically correct posts, have been here for decades rather than days or years, and generally prefer to discuss things rather than aquire knowledge, does not make them excempt, rather the opposite.
PS: I fully expect another recent poster to this thread to be true to their habits & jump on this opportunity to bicker & spray some smelly skunk stuff around. I shall remain unfazed.

Four jerks do not reduce the value of the 200+ members who seem excellent company. Just my opinion.

Agreed but I see you on the same threads enough that you should realize "I'm not that guy". This thread may be a bit different because I'm neither helping someone fix a problem, having a philosophical or technical debate, nor even a smartphone owner. As a result, and especially as my interest in whether Enlightenment is still being pursued as viable phone software, this one isn't in my top 10. It's more casual and I certainly meant no offense by being somewhat cavalier.
.
Thanks, but two of the 5 phones run on Android, not "real" GNU/Linux.
That article does not reflect the choice of both open devices & truly open OS currently available.
A deeper introduction into the whole topic would have been appreciated, but even as a mere "best of" it is useless. Pointless.

I agree, pointless article, but at least the PinePhone made number 1
But on a more serious note. Most people think that if it runs Ubuntu Touch it's a "Gnu/Linux" phone, despite the fact that ubports maintains two different source trees. One using wayland and a regular linux kernel, and one using device specific android kernels/shims for android devices.
One using wayland and a regular linux kernel, and one using device specific android kernels/shims for android devices.
But isn't the same system built on top of that - a (more or less) real GNU/Unix-like (which, IMO, cannot be said about Android)?
Of course the kernel matters a lot, but the operating system built on top of it matters just as much. Is it accessible, and if yes, using familiar (GNU) paradigms & tools, or whatever Alphabet deem suitable to drive their agenda?
