Apple/iOS is the capital of protectionism, and Google/Android is the one of the noseys (or "nosy[s]"? How do you define "showing too much curiosity about other people's affairs"?).
Waiting to see what happens with FirefoxOS/Ubuntu touch/Sailfish OS... .

Ubuntu will gladly sell you for a buck, Sailfish isn't going anywhere for a long time, and Mozilla exists anymore through Googles deep pockets.

"Mercedes S-Class is much better than Toyota Landcruiser."
That pretty much sums up this thread.

Indeed, seeing that Bentley is owned and produced by Volkswagen, that describes it pretty much: a disguise to make overpriced, but cheaply produced, hardware more appealing.

That being the point of my original analogy.

I much prefer my V8 powered Troopcarrier thanks and can't stand Mercs

I know I'm late to this thread but is that the type of response you were looking for?

How can free vs free be cheaper unless you mean cheaper quality.

Sort-of yes. I'd like to hear from people using the S-Class to round up sheep or drag hay bales around fields also.

They mount German motors into metal parts they get from Germany. I am not quite sure if I would count that as "hand built".
I am also not quite sure if in times where robots can assemble cars with millimeter precision a hand built car is a sign of quality.
