3G USB stick/modem: reading out / displaying signal strength

I want to point my antenna at the strongest signal. So I intend to turn it step by step and read out signal strength, stopping at the best direction. How can I read out and / or display the actual signal strength?

Using OpenSuSE 11.2 and a Huawei E176 stick.

I downloaded it right away, installed it and would you believe it? It says "Can't write to /dev/ttyUSB1" while I am root, not to mention that "ls la" yields "crw-rw----" Currently I have no idea what I'm doing wrong.
