Question Unity Won't show Up in session list

I installed mint 17.2 xfce to my laptop, and wanted to make it more touchscreen friendly by adding unity to the session list.

However, even though I installed unity from the software manager, it won't show up in the session list on the login screen.

To see if I could install other shells, I added Cinnamon, which works fine, and KDE, which opens with a screen of pictures loading before going blank, though it still lets me log out through a menu when I press the power button.

I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling unity through the software manager and terminal several times, and also switched MDM to LightDM. However, even though it says "ubuntu" in the corner, it still won't show unity in the list.

Also, if it is related, I had previously tried installing the gnome shell shell, but uninstalled it, though it kept showing up in the seesion list in MDM. However, the option went away in LightDM.

How do I add Unity to the session list so I can use it, since it is apparently installed?

Unity Won't show Up in session list

What you fail to mention is what commands you ran to install Unity. It may be that Unity isn't completely installed and that is why it's not showing up in the session list.

Edit: You may also have to create the file for the session list to show Unity as an option.

All I did was the command "sudo apt-get install unity" in the terminal. Then "sudo apt-get update" just in case.

Are there other commands I must do? I am still new to this Linux game.

I followed the advice at http://ubuntuportal.com/2012/09/how-...t-13-maya.html because it mentions the xsession.

Now it shows Ubuntu as an option in the session list, but when I attempt to log in it keeps returning to the start screen.

What would I have to do to change it so that it works?

It said to put into the terminal:

cat > /usr/share/xsessions/unity.desktop <<-EOF
[Desktop Entry]
Name=Ubuntu
Comment=This session logs you into Ubuntu
Exec=gnome-session --session=ubuntu
TryExec=unity
Icon=
Type=Application
X-Ubuntu-Gettext-Domain=gnome-session-3.0
EOF

Question

It works now, but now Ubuntu shows up twice in the session list, and opening the files in /usr/share/xsessions/ has them looking both the same.

How do I remove the correct file from the list?
