PIA VPN suddenly becomes unstable

I have been using PIA VPN for several years and it has been rock-solid. It was originally setup via the network-manger applet/application by importing the PIA ovpn files.

This week it started failing. The VPN tunnel stayed up but traffic would completely stop running. I would have to re-connect to get thing working.

Mr. Google suggest that I should download newer ovpn files from PIA. I did this and setup another vpn site by importing the newer ovpn files. This seemed to work but before long things we freezing again.

I finally tried running openvpn directly for the CLI using the ovpn config file and it works perfectly.

This looks like some kind of a configuration problem with network-manager but I can't figure out how to fix it.
Any ideas on what is broken or suggestions on how to fix it??

Mint 17.3 Rosa
network-manger 0.9.8.8
network-manager-openvpn 0.9.8.2
openvpn 2.3.2

As it happens I signed up with them yesterday. Fedora (using openVPN) for me, and it won't reconnect after suspend/hibernation. Probably a systemd issue - I think I'll have to set up a service for it. Other than that seems solid enough - but only 1 day so far.
I have a mint system that needs to be connected after I'm satisfied, so I'll report back.

We've had one issue on Mint - looked like a loss of DNS resolution. Disconnect then immediate reconnect of the VPN fixed it. Nothing since.
I have a cron script that checks the DNS every 5 mins (just attempts to hit a website), but no misses so far since that one occurrence.

I don't think PIA understand systemd - they'll get a rude shock soon with Ubuntu/Mint I suspect.

I've given up on getting this fixed. I have a simple script to run openvpn directly and pass a .opvn config file.
Not as convenient as using the toolbar icon but it least it is stable.

I don't know if you're up for GUI solutions, but have you considered giving Fruho (https://fruho.com/) a whirl?

Interesting. I had to write a NetworkManager dispatcher to fix Fedora.
I may just have a look ... thanks.
