No sound in LM7

I have just installed Linux mint 7 Gloria on a gateway 3550gz laptop but there is no sound at all with the volume at 100%. I have tried selecting alsa, oss and pulse but no change. Flash or cds or dvds have no sound either.

This is the sound controller. Open a console and run the command 'lsmod | grep snd' ( without the quotes ) and post the results.

On an integrated Intel AC97 controller I had a similar problem which was resolved by activating a mysterious VIA DXS volume control in Volume Control -> Preferences (with VIA 8235 (Alsa mixer) as device) and setting it to something other than 0%.

update Alsa

When I installed Mint 7 on my newer Acer laptop with
Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) HD Audio Controller (rev 04)
I had no sound.

Upgrading Alsa fixed it for me.

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.p...10#post6589810

The Alsa Upgrade Script is located at the bottom of the first post

* download the script
* cd <your-download-dir>
* tar xvf AlsaUpgrade-version.tar
* sudo ./AlsaUpgrade-version.sh

where "version" is the latest version that you download
