I have been running a dual boot system for some time: Win 10 and Linux Mint 18.1 with no problem. On power on, GRUB offers a choice of Win 10, or Mint, or others, as expected. I have installed all Win 10 updates, including the major v1607 update when it was released last year; no problem.
I recently updated Win 10 to the Creators Update, v1703, another major update. After reboot, my system would not boot: I saw a 3 line error message from GRUB. I don't recall the exact message. I then could not boot either Win 10 or Mint. I wiped the disk and reinstalled Win 10 v1703 successfully. Then I installed Mint 18.1 again. On reboot, I had same GRUB error, and I could not boot either OS. I have not tried any other Linux distro. I reinstalled Win 10 v1703 from backup.
Apparently Win 10 v1703 breaks GRUB. How do I fix this? How can I dual boot Win 10 v1703 and Mint 18.1?
I am embarrassed. I installed Min 18.1 again. Previously, I had rebooted when the install procedure said it was finished. This time, I waited until the CD light and disk activity light went out. Then another 5 min. Then, the reboot was successful. Now I have no problem; win 10 v1703 and Mint 18.1 both boot OK. Thanks for your effort. Mea culpa.
Could you point me to a guide on how to dual boot Win 10 and LM 18.1?
I've managed to install them both, but I can't get the UEFI to boot GRUB, and a day after I installed, I couldn't even find GRUB in the boot options on the UEFI.
I've read a bunch of different methods, but none have worked (long-term).
So far I've tried installing straight up. First Win 10, then Mint. That didn't work, so I wiped the Mint install and (by another method) installed Mint on the same partition as Windows Boot Manager. That worked, but wiped the Mint boot option the next day.
My next move is to install Mint straight up again, but with a /boot/efi partition (~600 MB). How did you work it? AM I on the right track?
Before anything else, it's almost always best to start a new thread of your own, despite the similarity in subject matter. In this case moreso because the thread is marked "Solved" - there will probably be very few people seeing your post. I was only notified because I had a couple of posts in the thread in reply to the OP (and I was the only one).
So, to your problem. First of all, could you boot up into Windows, run diskmgmt.msc and let me know how your partitions are currently set up (all details please).
