Hey we'll need some more info such as: do you get to any gui or do you have to log in on command line? does it boot to emergency mode? are you referring to cinnamon running in software rendering mode? Did you do anything that could have messed it up?

its in called fallback mode as far as I am aware

I have networking and yes I have a black desktop screen as gui with 2 tabs at the top which read applications and the 2nd one is called places

under applications the following headings are there
accessories --under acessorries the folowing headings have a red circle with a red line through it on a black background
files
gpa

other headings which are there but may or may not work have not checked
graphics
internet--browser works as does hexchat
office
sound and vision
system tools

under system tools new login , virtual network editor , vmware player vmware workstation have a red circle with a red line through it on a black background

under places

home folder--nothing happens when I click

desktop--nothing happens when I click

documents, music pictures viedo, downloads and under heading computer audio disk have a red circle with a red line through it on a black background

network heading has no effect
connect to server box does open
recent docments --docmuents do not open but video from youtube opens and plays

cannot seem to find command prompt --must be somewhere

what may have caused my problem was that a package was being installed some thing to do with assisting when you upgrade forgot the name and some lib6 packages were installed
sorrey for not being clear

thanks for your post

"Applications" and "Places" are, as far as I am aware, part of Gnome desktop, not Cinnamon.

Did you try installing Gnome desktop on your Mint system?

"Applications" and "Places" are, indeed, part of Gnome desktop. But the OP is correct that this is the fallback when Cinnamon fails to load in Linux Mint.
It has happened to me, long ago...
