Cinnamon crashes after user switch

Hi Guys,

I am experiencing cinnamon crashes on a regular base, say once a week.
It happens after switching users. I don't log off but switch user to another account. Then, when i come back to my account and i want to start a program (in case of the screen shot, firefox) the desktop becomes non responsive and the just started program window stays empty.
See screen shot at http://postimg.org/image/mv7580bhf/
In the taskbar i get "little wheels" on programs that i try to start. Not everything freezes. The mouse is still working and i can start a virtual terminal. Alt-F2 doesn't work, so i can't start xkill.
Cntrl-alt-backspace doens't work either, and the shutdown or restart command in the gui doesn't do anything.
The only way to get around is to start a virtual terminal and use killall -g cinnamon.
In the update manager there is a newer xorg-server (2:1.15.1-0ubuntu2.7) available. It's is a level 4 update. Could this make a difference or will it do more harm then good?

I am using Linux mint 17.1 64 bit, cinnamon 2.4.6 Kernel 3.13.0-44.
I updated the kernel from default 3.13.0-37 to 3.13.0-44 after i installed linux mint.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Richard

Just try to close the unresponsive windows(click on X) and wait, then the system will suggest you to quit the windows by force and submit it. After that, the desktop icons will dissapear for a 1/2 second and then appear again, now your system is responsive.
P.S Crashing Cinnamon Desktop is very usual thing if computer is not fast enough, cinnamon isn't light-weight desktop and it requires much resources

Thanks for you reply.
If I wait, nothing happens so I am not getting a suggestion for closing the window by force. Can't go to the taskmanager. Can't kill any applications only cinnamon as described above.
The pc isn't slow. It's a sandybridge I5 2500k running at 4.3Ghz with 8G of ram. I Tried without overclock as well but no improvement, so it is not the overclock.

By the way i gave up on mint for now since the network connection (in linux only) suddenly stopped working for whatever reason.
Now playing around with windows 10, i will give mint a try again later.

cheers,
Richard.
