trouble with updating linpus lite on aspire 1

I'm using the default package updater. It found an enormous list of stuff to update. First I just thought I'll install all of the updates. They were selected by default anyway.

Unfortunately this is what I got:
Quote:
Missing Dependency: gecko-libs = 1.8.1.19 is needed by package yelp
notification-daemon-xfce conflicts with notify-daemon
Then I simply chose not to update yelp. I unchecked that package and continued with the update plan.

Ok. I'll just uncheck that aswell.

Quote:
Unresolvable requirement kde-settings >= 3.5 for kdelibs
Unresolvable requirement notification-daemon for notify-python
Unresolvable requirement kde-filesystem for kdelibs
What the... Fine. I'll just simply uncheck half of the stuff I was supposed to update. There.

You have got to be kidding. This is just gettin unreal. I'll simply install the first three packages on the top of the list. I'll consider this a proof of concept.
Quote:
Unresolvable requirement kernel >= 2.4 for vpnc
Unresolvable requirement redhat-menus >= 1.11 for htmlview
Unresolvable requirement kernel >= 2.6.14 for fuse
Unresolvable requirement notification-daemon for notify-python
Unresolvable requirement kde-settings >= 3.5 for kdelibs
Unresolvable requirement kde-filesystem for kdelibs
Unresolvable requirement redhat-menus for kdelibs
Unresolvable requirement libgnome-menu.so.2 for gnome-screensaver
I'm beginning to feel I'm in one of those candid camera shows. This is just getting ridiculous.
That's it. No updates today. Perhaps I'll just install ubuntu or something... This is the first severe issue I've had with linpus during these few months i've used it. Otherwise it's ok if you tweak it a bit.

You might think Linpus is OK, but it drove me nuts..

It is rather disappointing how poorly they have managed the updates for those units. I've seen quite a few posts here of people that updated the AAO running linpus to end up with a broken or non-functioning OS, a network interface that no longer works, or any other number of issues..

I couldn't reload my AAO fast enough after pulling it out of the box.. Debian Lenny with LXDE desktop and haven't looked back. runs great, updates work and don't break the system when applied.. yes much, much better.

Links in sig to how-to's for various distros on the AAO if you are interested..

cheers !!

Initially I had easy peasy installed. It turned out to be a bad idea since I coulnd't switch wlan on or off as I wanted, the sounds worked only occasionally and suspend and resume had some issues. All these are vital key features of a laptop and if they don't work perfectly, there's not much idea using such a device. I am aware that linpus is a torture device, but at least the most important features work perfectly. The rest of it is only barely tolerable, but at least the key features work.

Linux4One seems very attractive. I might try that out.
