Could somebody please tell me how to get my synaptic track pad working? I've seen a few posts that contain links to drivers, but I am new to linux and do not know how to compile these. Any help is appreciated.

What distro are you using? If you have a recent kernel the driver for the kernel is built into the psmouse driver. You may need to install the X module for the touch pad though. This links may be of use.

If you use debian, let me know, it's a lot eaiser to get working.
I am using red hat het, not debian. I found that driver page and I think that is what I need, but I do not know how to compile that 0.13.5 driver into a workable file. I read the installer read me, but I was still confused as to how I am supposed to do it. Could you give me a quick run down on how I compile everything into a working driver? Thanks for the help.

I think you may only need the stuff from the first link (minus the tpconfig stuff) That is all I needed. Which one are you trying to compile?

Just follow the stuff in the INSTALL file. Make sure you have the X header files installed then just run make, and follow the rest of the instructions for configuring the driver.
