Toshiba Modem

I am still trying to set up my modem, I have a toshiba 2410, with a winmodem, I downloaded the slmdm driver but it fails to install.

I am hoping that somebody that has the same computer would pm me a copy of their make files, and any other configuration files.

thanks much

Hi
Where exactly does it fail?
Wish I could help but in fact I probably know less than you.
You see I have a Toshiba satellite 1800 and slmdm doesn't load on it too. (insmod slamrmo fails)
I really would like to know why it doesn't work on my computer. Is it because our config files are not-as-good-as-they-should-be? You know, for too long have I been asking "Why me???"
Thanks a lot ! I hope you can manage to find the files

I run SuSE 9 on a Toshiba Satellite 2410 and have the winmodem working great. In fact it works better than with the windows drivers.

The packet you need is Smartlink-Softmodem. It is on the SuSe 9 disks or you can download it from the www.suse.com site by goiing to the support site, then click "History" and scroll down to you see a link about smartlink and winmodems with Suse 8.2 or something like that.

Install Smartlink-Softmoden
login in as root 'su'
give the command: smartlink-softmodem-config
answer the config questions
direct modem to /dev/ttySL0

your on your way.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the advice, I will try the suse, site and I will post my results here.

I have a header problem I think, my install fails wen I do a make install, it chokes with the error "error 1" command not available, and "file directory not found".

I am going to update te kernel, then try the suse driver, perhaps somebody knows how to fix the screen split after "wake up".

Thanks again.

The only version of slmdm which works with my modem/sound card (SiS 7012) is 2.7.10, when you go to:

ftp://ftp.smlink.com/linux

enter the 'unsupported' directory and try some of them, there are about 30 different drivers in there.

Cheers

I tried the suse driver for the modem, it got further in the install, but I still have module dependencies problems, with time I will get it working. I found info specific to toshiba 2410, that says it will work, so Now I will never surrender.

On an other issue I finally got the split screen problem fixed, but I am not sure if I fixed in the bios, or by the proper Nvidia driver, I strongly suspect the driver setup as the culprit, but I do not want to experiment with it again.

Many thanks to all.

I run gentoo 1.4 on toshiba 2410 303S, kernel 2.6.2...the winmodem does not work with this kernel and the proper driver from slmodem-2.9.6 (it worked properly with 2.4.23 and slmdm-2.7.9)...I've tried alsa mode (with snd-intel8x0m module ) and the classic one....
Any suggestions?

Toshiba Modem

I am surprised that there has been so much trouble with the winmodem in the Toshiba Satellite Laptop. Getting mine to work was so simple. the SmartLink-Softmodem rpm is on the SuSE 9 Pro disk and installed with YAST - no problem! Then I su to root in a terminal window and typed in the command smartlink-softmodem-config, answered the modem question with 1 (being an internal modem), then answered the country question with 3 (for Australia), and finally used Yast to configure my modem to /dev/ttySL0.

SmartLink-Softmodem can be downloaded from a link on the www.suse.com site. This rpm has drivers specially for the Toshiba. I have reinstalled 5 or 6 times for various reasons and the winmodem has work perfectly each time.

On an other matter I find that the Nvida drivers for 3D are more trouble than they are worth on my Toshiba and I end up with a 2cm blank strip down the right hand side of the display and the only resolution I can get is 800x600 no matter what I do.

Hope this is helpful.

For use with 2.6.x kernels, Smart link have a driver which is supposed to work. It has support for ICH based modems, but not my SiS7012 based one.

It involves patching the kernel and then some other jiggery-pokery but I'm not sure what.

I installed RedHat 9B on Toshiba satellite Pro 6100, and all work fine.
But when i tried to configure internal modem, i had some problem.
I find 2 link that said that the right driver for my win-modem was slmdm-2.7.9 or slmdm-2.7.10.
So i tried to install first one then other, but in all case when i try:

modprobe slamrmo

I have:

Warning: loading /lib/modules/2.4.20-20.9/misc/slmdm.o will taint the kernel: non-GPL license - Smart Link Ltd.
See http://www.tux.org/lkml/#export-tainted for information about tainted modules

Can someone help me?

after much frustration and reading, I got further than you did, I got connected only once, then the modem kept telling me that there was no carrier. I have tried over and over the repeat the settings that got me connected the first time but no go.

I conceded and put the pcmcia modem back in and had a learning experience that was too stressfull to write here, in any case after several beard growths later, I finally got the pcmcia working again.

I understand that the "tainted kernel" error is normal, and does not really hurt anything. and the modem will work.

I am having a hard time figuring out where the modem gets it's interrupt and serial port from, info says that it is using (c980), a non serial port, and serial port (03f8) is detected and reports the modem is not on that port.
when I change port settings in kppp, it says modem not detected, and when I tell it to set to ttyso, or dev/modem, it says "modem busy".

I am hoping that someone whom has got this win modem working would be kind enough to post the settings and files to edit.

in an other event I would like to find someone that has gotten the sd card port working too.

not sure if my post is much help, but I will try again later.
