I'm looking at buying a "Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo D 1840" (Can't post url yet...) Does anyone know if Suse Linux will run ok on this? As in, am I going to be able to use all the hardware ok?
Or does anyone know of a laptop with the same spec (and price) that will work ok with Suse?
Currently i'm dual booting XP Home and Suse 9 pro.
Most things seem to work ok on suse, currently dont have any 3d accl though (would be nice to get more than 150fps on glxgears!). Had to use NdisWrapper (here) to get it to pickup the wireless lan (Broadcom 4301 chipset), yet to test it.
Also im booting w/the options "nosmp noapic", no sound or ethernet otherwise...
SD card reader doesn't seem to work (looking into it now).
Hi, ive got a question. I got the same notebook and recently tried to get linux suse 9.0 on it. it installed perfectly, BUT the whole USB system oesnt work. so i cant use neiter my logitech cordless optical wheel mouse nor my touchpad. and navigating without that is really hard and makes no un. cold anyone help me please?
have you tried the failsafe boot option?
I have to boot w/ "nosmp noapic", otherwsie no sound or ethernet - do you have either of these?
USB modules loaded?
Also, which graphics card do you have? and wat kinda fps do you get on glxgears?
i finally achieved to get it to run. currently im dual booting winxp pro and linux 9.0 pro. no problems so far, but i cant get my wireless working (netgear pcmcia card)
and another question, do you know how i can get my dvd rom working? have the amilo d 1840 as well, so you already know the specs. would be nice if you helped me.
Not sure about the netgear, try googling they're quite a popular brand...
As for the dvd-rom, what do you mean it doesnt work? I had to enable DMA to get smooth playback...Not got it to hand now but i'll post how i did it, bit of a botch job cos I dont really know how its supposed to be done
hey, thanks for that quick reply.....well, i dont have the problem of smoothness when playing videos or so on, suse just doesnt know my dvd/cd rom.....it says that its mounted, but i always get a failure message when trying to access my dvd
can you probably tell me how i can configure my system to get it to work?
Hi everybody!
I've got an Amilo D 1840 with SuSE 9.1 Personal running on it. There are two things I can't get working. One thing is 3d acceleration for the Mobility Radeon and the SD-Card reader.
What works, is my Netgear wireless PCMCIA-card. You can make it work by downloading the appropriate driver via YaST Online Update. This driver can't be distributed on the CDs because of license problems.
I don't mind if the 3d acceleration doesn't work, but the card reader would be nice (I've got several devices using SD-cards, and my brother has some devices using Sony's MemoryStick, which can be read with this card-reader). So if sombody finds out how to make it work, please tell me.

the 3d accel can be started by installing the ATI driver but it's known to be buggy and ATI doesn't listen to customers so .... leave it.
I haven't seen the cardreader to work either.
I have had the builtin 802.11b working but as it's broadcom, there is no native support. ditched this feature and now use a ZyXEl G100 card.
few other things like tapping on the touchpad doesn't work.
Actually running SUSE 9.1 I am not able to make run the BROADCOM wireless card.
Is there someone who is able to explain me how can I do , in a really esay way?
