Sudden problem - X won't load on docking station

I can boot up completely into a UI, and get my desktop to load, only when I'm not on the docking station. When it's on the docking station I get to the graphical login manager, log in, and then it seemingly freezes - no mouse movement, limited hard drive activity, and no further loading progress.

Background:
Ordinarily I keep the laptop shut and use only the 22" monitor connected to the docking station.
Periodically it has trouble with xscreensaver and dual screens, where it decides that contrary to my settings the laptop screen should be on and what's more, it should be positioned right on top of the 2nd monitor. This causes xscreensaver to only display in the 'laptop' area of the 22", and me to go fiddle with monitor settings again. That happened again yesterday. I tried to disable the laptop screen for the millionth time before giving up and dealing with the odd screensaver for the rest of the day.. which brings us up to date.

It's a Dell latitude D630 running Ubuntu 8.04.

I've run the 'Fix xorg' selection from booting up in recovery mode, with no noticeable effect.

The difference between the Xorg logs is this --

I have no idea what to do to kick it out of that infinite loop! Does anyone have any ideas?

Many thanks!
