Subtle synaptics touchpad problem on Compaq R4000

Howdy all. I've got Suse 10 running on a Compaq R4000, and after reading most of what's been said about Synaptics touchpads on these forums I can only conclude that things are pretty much working. The issue I have is that clicking and dragging, i.e. to move a window or select some text, works only about one out of three times I attempt it. I've played with all the settings in KControl which as far as I can tell correspond exactly to Ksynaptics, and none of them fix the problem. I'm currently using the touchpad with everything turned off- the scroll zones, tapping, etc. Still happens. The only thing that seems to make any difference is that when I tell KControl that it's an ALPS touchpad, apply changes, and then turn that off and apply changes, it works perfectly as long as I don't move the cursor out of that window. If I do, back to normal. If anyone's got any advice here I'd be grateful, because it's driving me nuts. My xorg.conf is using the Synaptics driver and the log doesn't have any complaints.
