startx - (EE) Failed to load module "nv" (module does not exist, 0)

I have a notebook apparently with both Intel and Nvidia graphic chips.

Code:
$*lspci -nn | grep -i -E 'vga|nvidia'
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Intel Corporation Device [8086:5916] (rev 02)
01:00.0 3D controller [0302]: NVIDIA Corporation GM108M [GeForce 940MX] [10de:134d] (rev a2)
I've a fresh installation Devuan Beowulf (which in this regard is identical to the corresponding Debian) on amd64 and startx is failing with the following error and no others, even when started manually (after having turned off the display manager):

Code:
(EE) Failed to load module "nv" (module does not exist, 0)
With the display manager on, lightdm starts fine and I get a graphical login. It is only after I enter the login credentials into lightdm that it then shows a black screen momentarily and kicks me out and returns to the login screen again. File and directory permissions are ok for that account.

I'm completely unfamiliar with graphics hardware and configuring it. I'd be grateful for and tips or solutions.

Hi,

I'm not familiar with debian, but nv is the nouveau (opensource) driver for nvidia cards.
So I guess you need to install the nouveau driver for your distro

Regards

It seems to be in place,

Code:
$ apt-cache policy xserver-xorg-video-nouveau | head -n 3
xserver-xorg-video-nouveau:
  Installed: 1:1.0.15-3
  Candidate: 1:1.0.15-3

$ apt-cache policy libdrm-nouveau2 | head -n 3
libdrm-nouveau2:
  Installed: 2.4.93-1
  Candidate: 2.4.93-1
or is the an additional component?

Yup, it's installed.
If you use a xorg,conf make sure that you use the "nouveau" driver instead of "nv". Or else you need to reconfigure xorg.
Since I don't use debian, this might be useful in your case.
