screen resolution incorrect display

My laptop is t420s. OS is debian testing (wheezy/sid).

Previously the installation works ok and can display 1600x900 resolution without a problem until I hit unknown buttons (can't remember what I pressed)

Now the screen become 1024x768 with screen display at the center.

If I use
Code:
xrandr -s 1600x900
then the screen become 1600x900, but the available space for application would only occupy 3/4 of the screen. And xrandr is as below
Code:
Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1600 x 900, maximum 8192 x 8192
LVDS1 connected 1600x900+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 310mm x 174mm
   1600x900 60.0*+
   1440x900 59.9
   1360x768 59.8 60.0
   1152x864 60.0
   1024x768 60.0
   800x600 60.3 56.2
   640x480 59.9
VGA1 connected 1024x768+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 0mm x 0mm
   1024x768 60.0*
   800x600 60.3 56.2
   848x480 60.0
   640x480 59.9
I don't see any EE in /var/log/Xorg.0.log
Where can I start to check or switch back to the correct setting?

Thanks

Does the system have an xorg.conf file??? Look for it in /etc/X11/ and if present, please post the contents.

There is no Xorg.conf existed in /etc/X11
Code:
app-defaults notion X Xreset Xsession XvMCConfig
default-display-manager rgb.txt xinit Xreset.d Xsession.d Xwrapper.config
fonts rxvt.menu xkb Xresources Xsession.options
Previously there was no Xorg.conf and everything worked well.

The next day after shutting down, the problem goes away. Resolution comes back again.

You probably just hit some hotkey that cause xrandr to switch displays (LVDS & VGA) and it put what assumed was an external display on your regular one...
