screen goes to sleep on live cd boot

hello guys

i tried to use ubuntu 10.10 live cd on my sony vaio laptop and the cd starts to load but the screen goes to sleep. i though it might be a problem with the live cd but tried the linux mint 10 live cd and same thing it loads the live cd and i choose the option to boot linux mint and the screen just goes blank. any help would be appreciated.

Do you see what might be called a splash screen at all?

Did you test this disk somehow or can you try it on a different system and first run check disk?

Has the laptop used other live cd's in the past?

i see the splash screen, but then goes completely blank. with linux mint i get the menu screen which asks me if i want to start linux mint etc but when i select an option it goes blank. i installed ubuntu 9.10 and tried a distro upgrade to 10.04 and everything went fine but when i rebooted the screen went blank. other linux distros work i.e. backtrack 4, slackware 13.1 but i really wanted ubuntu 10.10 as i want to use gnome rather than kde

Try some of the safe modes then maybe to start. It may be that the live cd puts your video beyond what it is using for a driver. It may be using vesa.

well after searching for the answer for several hours i found out that ubuntu 10.10 dont support internal display (something to do with EDID) for sony vaio nor does any other ubuntu based distros so i guess i'll stick to backtrack r2
