Remote Display not Functioning Properly

I am having a problem with the external display (connected via HDMI) to my laptop. It works properly on other operating systems but not with the Ubuntu 22.04. Dell 27" 25XCMS2. I get either a white screen or 1/4 of the top is a bar which has the image in it and the rest of the screen is white. (see attached)

I've changed the resolution to no avail.
Driver appears to be X.Org.X server -nouveau display driver from xserver-xorg-video-nouveau (open source) if that is any consequence. I do not know how to change drivers if that is necessay.

My laptop system info is:
Model HP Pavilion Gaming Laptop 15-ec0xxx

Memory Size 16384 MB RAM
BIOS Date 07/09/2020
BIOS Revision F.08
Installed OS version 2004 (10.0.19041)
Processor Type AMD Ryzen 5 3550H with Radeon Vega Mobile Gfx
Current Processor Speed 2100 MHz

Doing a search shows issues with Wayland and second monitors. I think Wayland is the default for Ubuntu, so try changing the session to use X.org.

Sorry, what is Wayland and how do I change the session to use X.org (which I think I am currently using).

Wayland is/will be a display manager like X11...it's not as mature right now, and has issues.

I followed the directions in the link you provided and used nano to edit the custom.conf file to both include and exclude Wayland.
Results were:

1. waylandenable=false - the secondary display works and displays all data except the computer now becomes VERY slow. A few seconds (5-30) wait is required for anything to happen after clicking an icon, an executable, or any link.

2. waylandenable=true - secondary display does not work (per the image attached to the original post) but the speed (from the laptop) is ok.

So, the bottom line is that with waylandenable=false, the display now works but there is a significant speed problem. In order to use Ubuntu on the laptop, I need to exclude the remote monitor and only use the laptop screen.

Ok, I noticed something...you're using the Nouveau driver. Have you tried loading the Radeon driver?

You may be on to something here. I just noticed a bunch of error lines flash on the screen as it boots up (too fast to read - other than the word "Nouveau").
I tried installing the Radeon driver but no change. However, I may not have installed the Radeon driver properly as the Nouveau error continues to flash at boot. Any suggestions on how to insure the Radeon driver is installed and not the Nouveau?

Wow...never seen nVidia and Radeon together. You should (??) be able to load the Radeon drivers as well as the nVidia drivers.
https://linuxconfig.org/how-to-insta...n-ubuntu-22-04

That would get rid of the Nouveau driver, and may make things work better. Unsure, though..uncharted territory for me.

Got it to only read the Radeon driver (I think - see log) but the extremely slow response still persists.

Looks like the nVidia driver is loaded, but if the HDMI port is using Radeon, that may be it. Have you loaded the Radeon drivers?

I think the newest AMD driver for Linux is named amdgpu, the radeon driver is for older graphics cards.
Looks like it does have both AMD and Nvidia gpus; https://linux-hardware.org/?probe=29f2cd44d5
