Angry Problems Trying to install lubuntu

Im trying to install lubuntu to an old laptop in hopes it will run faster then XP on the laptop. I trying installing from a disk but that never would finish, so since it is the same setup and is almost identical on the setup i tried to just run the wubi right off the disk to install the OS and that seemed to work until i rebooted the system and got the the OS choice i picked ubuntu and it brought me to the grub editor thingy....

When i try to install from the disk i get a warning message
glib warning due to unknown user id (0)
and then it goes to a screen with either the lubuntu default background with the black lubuntu mouse or just the mouse with a black background and by this time the CD drive has stopped working on my dell insprion 6000

I used to have a Dell Inspiron 6000. It served me well for many years until the display gave up the ghost. That's a very old box.

Can you boot to a Live CD and full functionality?

Also, what version lubuntu? There seem to be bug reports of that error in 10.04.
