Question mandrake 10 screen freeze/relocation

hi,
I'm a total newbie to linux. I've installed mandrake 10 on my toshiba satellite 6100.
when I leave the computer switched on for a while long enough to switch on the screensaver and/or turn off the screen something goes wrong. when I open the lid or move the mouse to activate screen all I get is the resized and moved quarter the height down screen and no mouse pointer. refreshing the desktop doesn't help. the only thing (I assume) I can do is restart the computer.
anyone faced similar problem?

thanks in advance for your help
