Angry laptop dhcp could be the dealbreaker

hey, ive got an hp pavilion laptop without dhcp. Ive been trying to get the network up for a few weeks to a month now, to no avail. my previous thread is up here in the netorking forum, and it includes some status msgs like ifconfig, etc:

http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...hreadid=192285

any help on this is greatly appreciated, because i am totally out of ideas on what to do... and i would really like to have linux on this laptop as a testing bay before i start migrating stuff on other systems, and i especially do not want to install xp on it again!

the one problem that i think is relevant is that during my boot sequence, et0 and eth1 (eth1 is what im trying to use, an external d-link dfe-670txd pcmcia card) both fail, stating that a dhcp client could not be found. what could be wrong?

As I read in the other thread, apparently the kernel does recognize the card... Cause you see it in ifconfig -a...
Are you sure there's a DHCP client program installed? Try if you can run 'pump' or 'dhcpcd' from the command line -- if not, you'd need to install one of these. (Don't know which your distro uses though)

good luck!
