IR Remote ./ built in IRDA Laptop using lirc

I've encoded all my CD's to ogg and play them using Rhythmbox on my laptop

I quite like the idea of being able to control basic functions via a remote left over from an old cable box

from what I've read so far I need to use LIRC and the relevant Rhythmbox plugin

but can i use the built in IR port on the laptop (IBM X31) or will I have to make a dongle?

and are there any guides specifically for this?

The distance between remote and latop won't be more than 3 metres

Thanks in advance
Nandish
