Thumbs down Inspiron 9100 with ati 9700 screen not shutting off with lid

I am using debian unstable and kde unstable with kernel 2.6.8.1. When I shut the lid to the laptop the screen doesn't power off. I have tried playing with the power management. The only options in kde control center for the lid button are suspend hibernate or power off. I have talked to others using the same version of software and they have not had any problems. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Other than this though the video card works good. Drivers installed correctly.
