Corruption at the top of screen after shutting and opening laptop lid

Hi. Whenever I close the lid of my laptop (a thinkpad x40), and reopen it, the screen goes black, and when it turns back on again, a portion of the top of the screen is corrupted. I have to hit ctrl-alt-f1 and ctrl-alt-f7 again to get my desktop back. However, I can't take a screenshot of this, because as far as xorg can see, everything is working fine.

Does anyone have any ideas?
