HP 640 G1 with Linux after windows

Hello!

Present the refurbished notebook HP 640 G1 ( core i5 4gen, 8 Gb RAM, 120 Gb ssd, windows 10 pro licensed + MS office 2019 licensed).

In October 2024 windows 10 support will stop and office 2019 too.
Also, I can upgrade it to 16 Gb RAM 1600 MHz, 512 Gb ssd.
Can I install HDD/SSD instead DVD ROM?

I have wide experience of using Linux on desktops and laptops. This laptop I use for multimedia, reading articles, office, R and statistics, editing some scientific images and make presentations.

Is it better way to move to Linux Debian LXQT/XFCE or buy new notebook (budget is near 1000 USD)?
Is this PC morally obsolete or possible to use?

Best wishes, Citrate.

The answer is not which, but yes. By this I mean something like both.

#1 If the Microsoft based stuff is critical to you, you will need to plan your replacement strategy and shop for the new hardware. Trying for the Win11 upgrade is an option, but I would expect issues.

#2 I would not plan on adding hardware to the current laptop unless you get a great deal and REALLY want that. Instead plan on migrating all current functions needed over to the new platform, image or back up the old one, and install Linux and R to replace Windows and Office. When it was new you could get that laptop with SUSE Linux (or FreeDOS) instead of Windows, so you know it is compatible.

Nearly all of what you do now can be done from Linux, and some of it will be more efficient, but the workflow may be different. Having a backup platform to work from if/when the primary goes down is priceless! The old laptop is somewhat dated, but only obsolete because Microsoft. By migrating it to Linux you can expand its utility and extend its life.

Linux makes old kit fly.....

If you need Windows buy a new one, & put Linux on your old one.

I run Linux on an old HP T520 thin client, (1.2GHz dual core, 2GB ram, 16GB M2 SSD), so yours will fly....

Something not making sense to me here. Are these HP 32 bit bios or something I don't know about.

Possible to use = yes. Morally obsolete. There are some barrio folks down here drooling over those specs.

Good luck.

It has UEFI, can work in legacy mod too.

Good point. You have nearly two years to shop for the best deals on whatever options you choose.
