But the way Acer is making linux familiar is awful. Lets say I have never seen or heard about linux. -> <<I went to e-bay, and bought Acer Aspire One for $255. It said that it has "Linpus Lite", whats that? Anyway, yestarday I received it, and powerd it on ... YUCK!!! My Palm Treo has better interface, and more setings than this ****>> Am I wrong? <<The same day I went to the pub two squares down the street. I found Jason there, so, we started talking and I told him about that "linpus". Jason listened carefully, then after an hour he told me "See you around, I go tell some folks to be aware of linpus, or linux, so they dont fall in a trap, just like you!" Ok, I go tell mine, bye> Was these wrong? Huh? They use XFCE, which is one of the ugliest desktop manager I ever saw, they support the most outdated software I ever used, and they give the less support I ever received. WHAT DID THEY HAVE ON MIND???
Linpus Lite in no way has a worse reputation than Vista.. although there are people out there that will tell you how awesome Vista is.. sitting around with a bunch of IT guys at a recent seminar we got on the topic and every single one disliked vista, didn't like the interface, didn't like the changes, UAC is a joke, didn't like the performance. and these were mostly Windows Admins.. So to solve the problem None of them used it.. simple !!
If you bought a netbook with Linpus Lite on it, and didn't like it, you always have the option to reload it with Windows, or another alternative OS. so the person that bought that netbook KNOWING it didn't have windows on it when they bought it, Linpus Lite IS listed in the Specs, and you CAN buy the AspireOne with Windows on it. If you were unhappy afterwards you do have options. Now lets see if they succeed or fail at loading Windows on it.
Word of mouth from Windows users that don't like Linpus doesn't really phase me.. I don't care for Linpus Lite either, but I simply change it to an OS I like rather than complain about it.
Install dvd hangs. Hum, I wonder how much they charged you for this non working dvd.
Have now burned a proper disk of the iso image and it STILL fails at the same point. Further searching has revealed this is a very, very common problem and a *real* screw-up by Acer. Fancy shipping install disks that don't work! I'll check their site for a fix tomorrow, but if there isn't one, this baby's heading straight back to the store for a full refund. A great shame indeed.

Reason: spelling error
There is also a BIOS update available possibly.. if you are going to return it anyway, can't hurt to try flashing the BIOS first to see if that resolves the install issue. http://macles.blogspot.com/2008/08/a...-recovery.html

Windows user? Me? No! I never used Windows , and I have no intention to do that. I am now installig openSUSE to my a acer, dual-boot with Ubuntu.
I loaded Ubuntu the second day I bought it, so pleaseeeee, read my previous post and look again at the part :"Lets say I have never seen or heard about linux".

If you are going to ruin my day, go on, do it.

Did you try installing something else, maybe it is a general problem with your netbook.

Okay, thanks for that. I've come across this fix (link at bottom)
which appears to contain some very useful tips to get the AAO up and running again with the original Linpus Lite. I'm about to give it a shot. Keep your fingers crossed for me, guys! :-/
Er., sigh... the link is clipped short for some reason by the LQ parsing software. If the idea works, I'll try to re-post it.
Well it didn't work out for me, so I won't.
Anyway, I've taken the AAO back and exchanged it for another one. The store was actually out of stock, but another customer came in to return theirs because Acer had forgotten to pack a battery with it and it was the second time they had had to come back to the store with a problem with it so their patience was exhausted.
I really didn't want a refund as I believe Acer have stayed close to the core concept of cheap, lightweight netbooks whilst accommodating the need for a sensibly-usable keyboard size/layout. But the fact remains the company need to make more effort to ensure their products are better supported as customer service and Q.A have long been below par and I'm far from the only one to have remarked on this. Just my 2c worth.
