Disable system beep on Acer netbook?

I just installed Hardy on my aspire one laptop and when I reboot or shut down, I get a surprisingly loud system beep. I have disabled the system beep in the gnome sound mixer, and and added 'blacklist snd_pcsp' to my /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist file. But it still does it. It's too loud for use in class rooms.

On my system (opensuse) I haven't found nothing easier than "modprobe -r pcspkr" to disable the internal speaker.
But I think that most kernels are compiled with pcspkr built-in and not as a module.
Furthermore, in SuSE there's an option to play a sound (or disable it), at the end of the shutdown sequence - maybe also on ubuntu.
