Dell XPS m1210, Microphone not working (not built-in)
i have tried everything i can google and i cannot get my microphone to work i have an HDA Intel card with the SigmaTel Codec can someone please help me?
yes ive tried every possible combo of the mute buttons in alsa mixer to no effect
when i test with audacity i get some static and if i plug/unplug my mic it jumps so i know its reading the right port i just think its not reading it correctally
I have the same problem on a Dell INSPIRON 6400. It seems that the SigmaTel device defaults the audio input port to line-in instead of microphone. In Windows you get a pop-up asking you what it is... On Linux (both Fedora and Ubuntu) sometimes it works when booted with the microphone already pluged in (not all the times). It never works when you plugin the microphone after booting.
There must be a flag, command, something that could be passed to the chipset in order to make it default in the logical way (not line in).

hey, i saw that you posted this in january of this year, and am wondering if you got the microphone to work? i just purchased an xps m1210 without the communication package, and would like to use the mic on my headset, and haven't had any luck. what have you done to fix this? i've been searching the forums for over a month now, and am starting to get worried i'll never fix it!
I'm having the same problem here with my xps m1210, kubuntu 7.04 (feity).
Can't make the microphone work (the only thing that I can't make to work)
Also get cracks when pluging and unpluging the microphone, but I get the same noise when I insert it on the head set or the microphone jack. :|
Somebody investigated the problem in detail and explains his procedure on alsa-dev forum.
I tried his solution and it worked for me
