Crashes switching console - FC6 on Compaq v6030

Laptop: Compaq v6030 (AMD/nVidia based)
OS: FC6 x86_64

This might not be a "laptop" issue, but as I don't know what the root of this problem is, here it gets posted.

Ok, so here are two things that I have to do to get the network to stop crashing on this laptop:
1) Install the nVidia video drivers.
2) set disable_msi = 1 for my audio card in the modprobe.

(I have not done #2 yet, but I don't feel it's going to fix the issue I am now trying to resolve).

Ok, so after this my machine boots up, loads into X with no problems, network works, system isn't crashing as long as I stay in X. However, now when I change to another console (Ctrl-Alt-Fx) the whole system crashes and I need to do a hard-reboot.

Results of this Ctrl-Alt-Fx are either:
1) Get a solid coloured screen (usually Red) and the machine is just frozen.
2) Get an odd coloured screen (i.e. blue) with white text and the machine will crash in under 60 seconds (i.e. I might have just enough time to type in the username/password to log in).

So -- here are my questions:
1) Has anyone seen this problem on another system and do they have any steps I can take to resolve it.
2) Does anyone have any clues if this is FC6, Hardware, or Driver related so that I can at least direct it to the correct person (p.s. The Vesa driver does not cause this issue, but if I use Vesa I have to disable the network or else the network startup crashes the machine.)
3) Does anyone know a way that I can get debug output for this, especially given that a) I'm a newb when it comes to gathering output logs, and b) The system completely locks up, hard-reboot, no way of accessing anything on the system without restarting.

Any help with this would be great as I now have the solutions for getting the following working on this machine:
A) Network
B) Video
C) Audio
And this is the last piece of "non-working" functionality.

Hi,

1. check dmseg (right after boot) and look for any clue (IRQ conflict....
2. does ctl-alt-bkup work to get off X, it it works, your penguin is alive.
3. check X log, if you have other penguin, ssh via network and see how things go (log, top../var/log/messages /var/log/syslog) also when console dies, this is the way to reboot remotely

Happy Penguins!

Thanks for the reply. Can't find a way to attach files, so I'll multi-part this message so it fits.

1) After I figured out it was "dmesg" not "dmseg" I managed to get the info:
This has really pushed the "limit" of my knowledge and I can see nothing in this report that looks out of place (other than that I forgot to disable bluetooth):

Ok, I think the crashing may be narrowed down to:

Checking aperture...
CPU 0: aperture @ 20de000000 size 32 MB
Aperture too small (32 MB)
No AGP bridge found
Memory: 989460k/1014784k available (2411k kernel code, 24928k reserved, 1720k data, 204k init)

However, I tried adding the following to my kernel line:
iommu=memaper=3

And it *still* said "Aperture too small (32 MB)" in my dmesg. I tried the ctrl-f1 trick in my bios to see if there was a setting in there, but there is not. Does anyone know how I can get this aperture thing fixed up? I'm not holding out for a miracle, but this seems like a good place to start.

Hi,

1. Sorry, I have not had time to check entire your post yet.
2. ssh in from another penguin, tail -f /var/log/XFree86.0.log (or log for Xorg) and change console (you may see something.)
3. Apology for typo (dmesg)
4. Aperture: I have nod had this trouble, I have no experience.

Nvidia X driver, console error.

Is your issue "after installing nvidia drivers and starting the xserver you no longer have access to your terminals 1-6 via the ctl-alt-f1-6 keystrokes?" if so please read below.

Nvidia linux driver console error.

I have the same issue on an hp laptop with nvidia gforce go and any distro.

Has anyone ever solved this? ? ?

see http://www.rengels.de/computer/linux/linux-nvidia.html

for some solutions, please keep me updated if you find a fix or if this isn't your specific problem.
