I have tried many configurations, and I notice that whenever I leave the device pointing to "/dev/mouse" or "/dev/input/mice" it says it cannot find it.

The only xorg.conf settings that's got X to run is the following

Identifier "Mouse1"
Driver "mouse"
Option "Protocol" "PS/2"
Option "Device" "/dev/ttyS0"


But once it loads, the mouse pointer just sits in the middle of the screen.
Anything else gives an error like this:

(EE) xf86OpenSerial: Cannot open device /dev/input/mice
No such device.


I have gotten everything else to work, but cannot find any solutions that have helped me fix this. Is it possible I didn't install linux correctly, or I'm missing parts? I am pretty newb , so please answer me with full descriptions and commands.

try this
if you don't have /dev/mouse use /dev/psaux

you should use slackware 10.2

It is 10.2.
